The Escritoire is a machine made by the player for the purpose of making breeding combinations easier as well as getting further insight on what breeds can be bred from the bee you are researching. Once made the interface has three sections, the left section is used for placing consumables such as honey, the middle area is a minigame used to research bees and gain combs, the right area is the output for notes and bee produce from successfully completing the minigame.

Right clicking on research notes will consume the notes and raise the odds of a successful mutation for the species the notes describe. Other players can consume your research notes to raise their chance of breeding as well. The Escritoire can potentially create research notes on any species, including parent species the player has not yet discovered in-game via breeding or exploring.

Interface[edit]

A Rocky bee ready to research.

To use the Escritoire, place a bee to be examined in the middle question mark hexagon. A number of book tiles will appear around it; the more complex the species, the greater the number of tiles. The Active species of this bee will be the one researched, and it will not be consumed. Stacks of items are then added to the left-hand column under the "Examine Specimens" button. These items are the fuel for the Escritoire and one of each will be used up each time the button is clicked.

A minimum of two consumables are needed for all species to get a hint. All the left-hand slots that do not have an X in them must be filled with at least one valid consumable in order for the Examine Specimens (Microscope icon) button to function. The same or different consumables may be used to fill the slots. While any items can be placed inside the Escritoire, only items the researched bee produces such as its own Combs or its specialty will have any useful result. Excess bees, Honeydew, and Honey Drops are effective on all species. Centrifuge products such as Beeswax or Propolis will not reveal tiles.

Playing the Minigame[edit]

A successfully completed minigame.
This tile matching memory game hides pairs of random bees under the book icons surrounding the researched bee. The goal of the game is to correctly match every pair of tiles without making any mistakes. Clicking on two non-matching tiles loses the game and the researched bee needs to be removed and replaced to restart. Successful matching of every tile will yield 0-7 of each item the researched bee can produce, and very often a <Player>'s Notes, detailing a random possible mutation of that species. Using a <Player's> Notes will yield a one-time increase in the chance of successful mutation by 5%, with a maximum cap of +50% of the basic mutation rate added - a 2% base mutation rate will become 3% after research, not 7%. Multiple copies of Notes will have no further effect.

To get a hint, click on the "Examine Specimens" button in the top left. This consumes items, hides any previously revealed tiles that are not paired, and uncovers 0-3 of the unmatched tiles on the playfield. Combs matching the species researched or excess bees always show two tiles, while honey drops or honeydew are more likely to show less. Though much more difficult, the game can be played even without consuming items, relying on random chance to match all the tiles.
