Name Mining Laser
Source Mod IndustrialCraft2
ID Name
IC2:itemToolMiningLaser
Type Tool
Stackable No

The Mining Laser is a more advanced mining tool than the different Mining Drills, offering many different modes of mining (such as Scatter and Explosive) and more efficient mining, most notably, the ability for a single shot to penetrate a line of multiple blocks. The laser is used by right clicking. When used, it will release a small laser pulse which will travel in a straight line at several blocks a second, instantly mining any block it comes into contact with (assuming the block can be mined)

The mining laser holds a charge of 200,000 EU (300,000 EU in IndustrialCraft2 Experimental), allowing for 160 shots in normal mode, however, each shot can penetrate up to 6 stone blocks or 24 dirt blocks, meaning that a single charge can potentially mine 960 stone blocks or 3840 dirt blocks.

Note that the mining laser cannot mine through Obsidian or Glass. It works on most non-vanilla blocks, as expected.

Because a single shot will mine through several blocks, the tool can be too powerful if you are trying to find ore without mining it, e.g. if you are trying to maximize diamonds with a Fortune 3 pick, the laser may accidentally shoot through a stone block and then the diamond blocks, dropping only 1 diamond each.

The mining laser, when tried to be enchanted using an anvil and an enchantment book, will succeed in applying the enchant on the mining laser in the anvil; but when placed in your inventory, the enchantment will separate from the gun back into the enchantment book. This action will cause you to lose your experience used for the enchanting process.

Modes and Power[edit]

The Mining Laser can store 200,000 EU (300,000 EU in IC2 Experimental). EU consumption depends on the relative difficulty of the particular block. In this chart, block penetration is based on smoothstone and dirt. For explosive shots the EU rates are much higher. The penetration distance of a Mining Laser is dependent on the mode. If left in Low-Focus Mode it can mine faster than a diamond drill with half the consumption and 20x more EU storage.

The mode can be changed by holding down the mode button (default "M") and right clicking. Note that some mods may conflict with this key, so it may help to change it in the key configurations.

Firing mode Mode description EU used per shot Damage per shot Beam travel distance Block penetration distance
Mining Normal beam, average power 1250 (160 shots) 3.5 hearts 64 blocks 6 (stone), 24 (dirt)
Low-Focus Very short-range beam, small power 100 (2000 shots) 0.5 hearts 3 blocks 1 (stone), 2 (dirt)
Long-Range High-powered beam, high power 5000 (40 shots) 10 hearts 64 blocks 27 (stone), 128+ (dirt)
Scatter 25 beams, 5x5 square formation, average power per beam 10,000 (20 shots) 2.5 hearts 64 blocks 16 (stone), 16 (dirt)
Explosive The beam explodes upon touching a block 5000 (40 shots) 3.5 hearts 64 blocks 2 (stone), 5 (dirt)
Horizontal The beam will travel perfectly horizontally. Presumed to be similar to mining mode. 1250 (160 shots) 3.5 hearts 64 blocks 6 (stone), 24 (dirt)
Super-Heat If the target can be smelted, the smelted product will be dropped instead of the block itself; see below. 2500 (80 shots) 3.5 hearts + 5 hearts burn damage Presumed to be 64 1 (stone), 13 (dirt)

Note: In v1.64 the mining laser will sometimes not fire in horizontal mode. Changing to a different mode restores its function.

Super-Heat mode was added in 1.90. fired on a sand or cobblestone, the block will be replaced with a glass/stone block instead of dropping sand/cobblestone. Doing so immediately terminates the beam.

When a super-heat laser beam is fired at a block such as stone, where the 'normal' drop can be smelted into the block itself, the block will be dropped as if it's 'normal' drop has been smelted.

CAUTION: Laser will occasionally destroy the block without giving you the item. (EXP. while mining stone, it may not give you the cobblestone it mined.) Note: Only found to glitch like this on Low-Focus mode, so far.

If an explosive Beam is fired directly underneath a mob, the mob will fly high up in the air and dies upon landing. It is unlikely that you can find the drops of the mob, because the mob flies far away.

Charging[edit]

The Mining Laser can be charged using any MV or higher energy storage unit, or a MV-compatible charging armor piece, such as the Lappack.
