Mana Bean is a food item added by the Thaumcraft 4 mod. Each bean is assigned to a certain Aspect. They can be obtained by breaking the Mana Pods growing on trees in Magical Forest and Eerie biomes, though wild beans only contain primal Aspects or Herba. Mana beans can also be obtained from the Pech.

Eating a mana bean can produce any one of a wide variety of effects. Most commonly, eating a mana bean will induce a random ten-second potion effect.

Mana beans are valued because they can be bred into any aspect, and can act as a pure source of the selected aspect when put into an Alchemical Furnace. Despite the fact it is possible to melt mana beans down into their corresponding essentia, they do not technically possess any aspects, meaning they cannot be scanned with the Thaumometer

Mana Pods[edit]

The beans can be replanted like Cocoa Beans, but on the bottom side of the log. This can only be done in biomes where mana beans can grow. Planting the bean will place a Mana Pod on the underside of the log. Mana Pods function similarly to Cocoa Pod. It also has 3 growth stages. But it also glows and emits light. Mana pods change color as they grow, to match the color of their associated aspect.

When a Mana Pod is immature, it may compound its aspect with the aspect of an adjoining Mana Pod. For example, an Aqua pod planted next to a mature Terra pod may grow into a Victus pod. Mana pods are also able to compound their aspects with beans that are still growing, so an Aqua pod planted next to an infant Terra pod may grow into Victus pod or a Limus Pod. When such plant fully grows and is harvested, it will drop 1-3 Mana Beans of the compound aspect.

An immature mana pod, when broken, will not drop any beans. Once the pod has developed to the stage where the aspect can no longer be changed, the pod will drop one bean when broken. When the pod is fully mature, it has a chance to drop a second bean.

A mature mana pod can be identified by a player wearing Goggles of Revealing: they will see an indicator on mature mana pods, as though the pod was a container storing a single point of its aspect's essentia.

Growth time is very slow, but it can be greatly sped up by using Lamp of Growth near the plant.

Research aspects in this item[edit]

Mana beans cannot be scanned, but they can be melted in an Alchemical Furnace (or similar) to produce 1 unit of essentia. (This essentia has the same aspect as the bean.)

Thaumonomicon Entry[edit]

Growth Stages

"Greatwood Trees:
These large and majestic trees can be found dotted all over the countryside. Their wood is able to absorb impressive amounts of magic making it a popular component in the crafting of magical devices.

Silverwood Trees:
These rare and magical trees are a wondrous sight. Their leaves shimmer with magical energy and their pale, soft wood is valued for its purifying properties. The trees magical nature is such that aura nodes often form within their hearts - this feature alone makes a silverwood sapling a prize beyond measure.

Shimmerleaf:
The strange, glowing flowers only grow in the shadow of Silverwood Trees. They can be harvested and pulped to produce quicksilver.

Cinderpearl:
Found only in the hottest of climes, these plants burn with elemental fire. They can be harvested and ground to produce a fine powder akin to Blaze powder.

Mana Pod:
This strange, pod like plant is only found growing on trees in magical forests. They grow very slowly and when harvested usually only yield one or two beans. These beans, known as Mana Beans, contain concentrated amounts of essentia. They can also be consumed, though the results are often a bit unpredictable. They can be replanted, but cultivation is difficult and time-consuming. Wild mana pods usually only produce primal aspects, though it is said that planting beans adjacent to existing ones sometimes result in beans with compound aspects."

Usage[edit]

Mana Bean can be used to create the following items:
